Chapter 6: Accommodation

When you book accomodation make sure to ask what (if any) parking is available. It is advisable to book as soon as possible, because Durham can get quite busy in the summer months with tourism. If you are thinking about booking somewhere that we have not mentioned below, we're happy to tell you what good/bad reports we have heard. Please let us know where you are staying. If there are any problems we will be able to find you, and also we might be able to match you up with other guests at that hotel to share taxis etc.

Budget Options:

St Chad's College has B&B accommodation. It is over the road from the cathedral. Rooms cost from £29 to £72 per night. Book well in advance. This is on the Bailey and has no parking, but very convenient if you are coming by train and happy to get around on foot. It is 5 minutes from the Market Place and the Walkergate complex, with a lot of places to eat.

Premier Inn (Durham City Centre) is about 2 years old. It is a 5 -10 minute walk from the Cathedral and train station, and has adjacent pay-for parking.Ideally located by the city centre if you arrive late on Friday night and want some food.

Premier Inn (Durham East) is about 5 years old. It is a 5 -10 minute drive from the Cathedral and train station, and has free parking. There is an adjoining restaurant serving food throughout the day.

Premier Inn (Durham North) is about a 10 minute drive from the Cathedral, train station and Durham School, and not a bad fall-back if the other two Premier Inns are full. It has an on site restaurant.

Travelodge (Durham) is a 15-20 minute walk from the Cathedral. It has free parking on site. This is the closest to our house.

Premium Options:

Radisson Blu Hotel, Durham is less than 5 years old and is a 15 minute walk from the cathedral. It is convenient for city centre restaurants if you arrive on Friday night. There is a pay-for car park.

Hotel Bannatyne - Durham is about 5 years old. It is a 5-10 minute drive from the train station and city centre. Breakfast and free parking are available on site, but you would need to go into the city centre for food.

Durham Marriott Royal County is the older, more tired of the premium options while still being central. Parking is available but limited. Rooms are older and a bit over-priced. Radisson Blu is as central and nicer, but the Marriott is not too bad if the Radisson is full.

Some to avoid:

The Three Tuns

The Gadds Town House
